The Fancher Family Origins.

Catherine, William, Hannah, David, Richard and John Fancher were not the children of David Faucher (Foucher) and Marthe Desfontaines, and the Fancher family in America has no connection to this Faucher family, French Huguenot ancestry, or to any Stepney, or Thread Needle Street Church, or London locations. The six Fancher siblings do not appear in the Threadneedle Street Church records with David Faucher and Marthe Desfontaines actual children: Jean, Elizabeth, Marthe, Suzanne, Ester, and Jean David.

New research has determined that the six Fancher siblings, Catherine, William, Hannah, David, Richard and John Fancher, were born in Brookhaven, Suffolk Co., NY. They were the children of William FancyFanshaw, Jr. The progenitor of the Fancher family in America was William Fancy/Fanshaw (Sr.) and his second wife Katherine. William FancyFanshaw, Sr. was one of the original proprietors of Setauket, Brookhaven, Suffolk Co., NY, and the earliest record of him is found in the New Haven Colony in 1643. “Fancy” and “Fancher” have been proven to be colonial spelling variants of the English Fanshawe surname.

Richard Fancher, thought to be a brother of Catherine, William, Hannah, John and David is found in Stamford, Connecticut about 1725 to 1730. He mov ed to Roxbury Township, Morris County, New Jersey, where he died someti me betweenOctober 29th, 1764 when his will was made and November 12, 17 64 when it was probated Morris County. His will names his wife as Marth a. Five children were baptized in New Canaan Congregational Church at N ew Canaan, Connecticut,and his will names William, Benjamin, David, Richa rd, Martha and Amy as his children then alive.

Richard Fancher lived in Roxbury Township, Morris County, NJ, where he died in 1764. He is first found 1725-1730 in the New Canaan, Connecticut area as a member of the New Canaan Congregational Church. He moved to Morris County,New Jersey about May 7, 1744 when a 357 acre tract was surveyed for him on the South Branch of the "Rarington" River. He was listed as a freeholder in Roxbury Township in August 1752. This are is still a part of Roxbury Township at Succasunna where some of his descendants remain to this day.

The first tract of land surveyed for Richard Fancher was from the Council of Proprietors of West New Jersey as a result of a warrant issued to one Hannah Sawyer who transferred it to one Will Gardiner and Richard Fancher. He purchased additional land Oct 17, 1744 for 1,000 Pounds. On 18 Nov 1747 he purchased from Will Gardiner his third parcel of land, but the deed was not recorded until August 1802.

New Jersey was a royal colony, granted to two prominent Englishmen by the King of England in 1664. (to be continued).

Settled at Black River by 1742, now Chester in Morris County, NJ when he served as a Roxbury Township Officer.

In the name of God, Amen, this twenty-ninth day of October in the year of our Lord One-Thousand-Seven-Hundred-Sixty-Four, I Richard Fancher of Roxbury in Morris County in the Providence of New Jersey, being sick and weak in body but of perfect mind and memory, thanks be given to God for it.  Therefore, calling to mind the mortality of the body, knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do make and ordain this my Will and Testament.  That is, privately and first of all, I give my Soul into hands of God that gave it and my body to the earth to be decently buried at the discretion of my Executors nothing doubting but that I shall receive the same again at the Resurrection by the mighty power of God and as touch in such worldly goods as it hath pleased God to endow me with.  I dispose of in the following manner: That is, I give unto my son William Fancher, to his heirs and assigns, One Hundred acres of land which I purchased of John Alin, it being the place where I now dwell. I then give and bequeath unto my son Benjamin Fancher, one hundred and fourteen acres of land where he now dwells, to him and his heirs and assigns, it being a lot I purchased of William Garner.

Then I give unto my son David Fancher, five shillings to be paid out of my moveable estate.

Then I give unto my son Richard Fancher, five shillings to be paid out of moveable estate.

Then I give unto my daughter Martha Bell, five shillings to be paid out of my moveable estate. .

Then I give unto my daughter Amy Fancher, five shillings to be paid out of my moveable estate.

Then I give unto my wife Martha, all the rest of my moveable estate to her heirs and assigns, to dispose of as she thinks fit and furthermore, I make and appoint my beloved wife and my beloved friend Wm. Griffin Executors of this my last Will and Testament, disclaiming and revoking all former Executors and Wills made or expressed to be mine and hold and affirm this and no other as my last Will and Testament.  In witness whereof, I the said Richard Fancher have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year first above written.
