Biography

James Fanning arrived in Australia via the convict ship - Bangalore arriving on the 30th April 1850. Spithead to Moreton Bay. Leaving Spithead on the 1st January 1850. Sentence of 7 years from Middlesex Clerkenwell General Sessions - Trial date 18th May 1847.

James was born about 1826. He passed away about 1882. Can trace James and Mary to Maryborough QLD. Then the family moved to Ravenswood where some of the children were born. Then to Cordelia < Ingham. James died in an accidental drowning in 1882.

James purchased his first Lot of Crown land in 1853, he purchased 4 more lots in 1855 at Maryborough. 1861 James opened his public house called the "Harp of Erin" premises in Adelaide and Ellena St. On his Lots he had purchased.

In 1863 James was charged with the murder of his first wife Eliza, but was acquitted due to witness accounts. Shortly afterwards he married Mary Ann Donaldson nee Delaney ( a widow), his second wife.

TROVE RECORDS Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser. FAMILY NOTICES. 1882 Fanning- On the night of the 11th April, by accidental drowning in Lagoon at back of Bemerside, Mr James Fanning , for many years a resident of Maryborough, Wide Bay.

Bemerside is located near Ingham and near Cordelia where they owned farming land.

Death records for Ingham cemetry state where the person is born some of his children were born in Maryborough others in Ravenswood.

Maryborough Chronicle, Wide Bay and Burnett Advertiser. Thursday 1st August 1861. Birth Notice. On the 29th Ultimo, at her residence, Harp of Erin Hotel, Adelaide St, the wife of Mr James Fanning of a son. Queensland Births records show this son is William Fanning son of James Fanning and Eliza Smith.

Land grants for Mary Ann Fanning Trove records 1886- 120A Cordelia.

James's death certificate in 1882 also has another James Fanning age 30 ( 1851 or 1852) listed as one of his children. Although there is no records or proof of Birth and death. This needs more research. He married Eliza in 1854.
