Birth & death dates & locations take from W.F. Brooks' family history published in 1905: History of the Fanning Family.

Brooks states that Walter responded to the first call for troops in the American Revolutionary War, on the date of 9 May 1775. He served in Colonel Samuel H. Parson's 6th Regiment as a master armorer (gunsmith) for the duration of the war.

For unknown reasons, Walter moved his family to upstate New York circa 1790, where the remainder of his children were born. They settled in the Blenheim area, finally choosing the area of Broome (now Gilboa). Of the 13 children, the first 4 births were recorded in Preston CT and the remaining 9 births in Blenheim NY.
