Biography

Gilbert Fanning was a son of Capt. James Fanning who served under Great Britain when that Government was at war with France. James Fanning wed Hannah SMITH of Smithtown and had five sons & four daughters; i.e. Phineas, Thomas, Gilbert [this profile] & Edmund, James, Catherine, Bethia, Sally & Nancy.

Deed book C 33, 8 Dec 1739. James Fanning of Southold deeds to William Coleman of same, 550 acres less 15 acres for £700 land in the Precinct of Goshen called Denne Hill where William Mapes now lives. Since James Fanning was living in Southold it is likely Gilbert was born there.

Gilbert Fanning married Huldah PALMER, of Stonington, Dec 25, 1753, by Rev Nathaniell Eells. Their children were all born in Stonington:
