Emaline Fannin was born about 1840 in Morgan County, Illinois and relocated to Carroll County, Arkansas about 1847. There she met and married Joseph Stevens. In 1875, the family moved to Erath County, Texas. On the trip to Texas, a young boy named Ely Lowe Brown joined the Stevens' group as they passed through Joplin, Missouri. According a descendant, Thomas Brown of Luling, Texas, Ely had always been treated as an underdog at home and had left home at age 12 (1872). Ely was an apprentice in a wagonyard in Joplin. He stayed with the family all the way to Texas, and on April 18, 1886, he married Alice Mildred Stevens, the daughter of Joseph and Emaline. Joseph and Emaline soon returned to Carroll County, Arkansas. However, their two oldest sons remained in Texas and their other children returned to Texas after 1880. It is unknown whether Joseph and/or Emaline returned to Texas or died in Arkansas.
I have the following children for this family: William Rufus, b. 1857; George Washington, b. 1858; Samuel, b 1863; Alice Mildred, b. 1866; Martha, b. 1867; Laura, b. 1869; Luvaday, b. 1873; Tom, b. 1875; Matilda, b. 1877; John, b. 1879; Robert, b. 1881; Joe, b. 1883.[1]
