Biography

Isaac Fanning was born in Alabama in 1832. He passed away in 1920.

The 1850 Census of Hopkins Co, Texas, lists Isaac J. (or I.?) Fanning (18, born Alabama), with his parents, John (51, born Virginia) and Matilda (40, born South Carolina) Fanning. His siblings are listed as David (28, born Alabama), William W. (12, born Mississippi), Mary (9, born Mississippi), Melinda (6, born Mississippi), John (4, born Arkansas), and George (1, born Texas). This indicates the family migrated from Virginia/South Carolina before 1822 to Alabama staying there at least until 1832, then moved to Mississippi before 1838 staying there at least until 1844, then moved to Arkansas before 1846 and to Texas by 1849.

A Texas marriage record indicates Isaac Fanning married Mary C. Clark on 28 September 1854 in Hopkins Co, Texas.

The 1860 Census of Erath Co, Texas lists Isaac Fanning (farmer, 27, born Alabama) with wife Mary C. (27, born Alabama) and two daughters, Miranda (4, born in Texas) and Isabella (3, born in Texas).

Isaac's military service is documented in the Compiled Service Records, which indicate he enlisted in 1862 and served with Baylor's Cavalry, 2nd Regiment Arizona Brigade.

An 1866 Hopkins County Marriage record indicates Isaac Fanning married Eliza J. Johnson on 4 Feb 1866. [I believe this is Eliza Louise Elmira Means Johnson, Ray James Jan 2020]

Isaac applied (#15518) for a Texas pension as a Confederate Veteran on 16 Aug 1909, citing his service with Co. C, Baylor's Regiment of Cavalry. He indicated he enlisted in 1862 and served "until the close." He stated he was 77 years old and was born in Alabama. The application is marked "approved".

The 1870 Census of Hopkins Co, Texas, lists Isaac Fanning (38) with wife Elizabeth (29), Isaac's mother Matilda (63, born S. C.), Isaac's brother George (21), and children Marinda (14), Isabella (13), and Almira (9). All children were born in Texas.

The 1880 Census of Hopkins Co, Texas lists Isaac Fanning (47), wife E. I. E. [I believe this should have been E. L. E.] Fanning (40), and children Lizzie (Melinda Elizabeth, 8), J J (5), Lem (3), and Minnie (3 months). This record indicates Isaac's father was born in Ind. which conflicts with the 1850 Census which is a more contemporary and credible record of Isaac's father John.

The 1900 Census of Hopkins Co, Texas lists Isaac (67, born July 1832) with wife Eliza (59, born SC, married 1866) and three children, John J. (b. Sept 1875), Minnie (b. Feb 1880), and Dollie (b. Oct 1883). Isaac again lists his father's birthplace as Indiana. Next door is his son Lemuel Fanning (b. July 1877 in Texas) and his wife Ava (b. in Texas Aug 1881).

The 1910 Census of Hopkins Co, Texas lists Isaac "Fannin" (77) with wife Eliza E (70, born Alabama) and daughter Dolly (20). In this record his father's birthplace is listed as South Carolina and his mother's as Alabama, again different from what is listed in the more contemporary and credible 1850 Census for his parents.

In December 1920, Mrs. E. I. E. Fanning of Hopkins Co (80 years old, born in Alabama) applied for a Texas state pension (#37138) as the widow of Confederate Veteran Isaac Fanning, who died 18 Nov 1920. She states they were married on 4 Feb 1866, and references his pension file 15518. The application is marked "approved".

Note: Tuck and Young list the cemetery stone inscription incorrectly, as T. Fanning 1832-1920 and Eliza E. Fanning 1840-1921.

Marriage 14 FEB 1866. Hopkins County Texas.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Isaac by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Isaac:
