When Valentine D. Fant was born in 1800 in South Carolina, his father, Abner, was 24 and his mother, Jane, was 20. He married Esther C. Moore on June 11, 1837, in his hometown. They had nine children in 24 years. He died on April 19, 1855, in Anderson, South Carolina, at the age of 55, and was buried there.
