Biography

Sarah was born in 1864 in Harrison County, West Virginia, probably on Davisson's Run south of Bridgeport where her family had a farm. She was the sixth and last born and daughter of George Thomas Faris and Mary Ann Sheets. She grew up on the family farm and in 1892 at age 28, she married Benjamin Franklin Bailey at her father's residence in Harrison County. The couple settled in Grafton in Taylor County, WV where Benjamin practiced as a lawyer. They had four children together, two of whom died young. Her husband Benjamin died in 1914. Sarah continued to live in Grafton, taking boarders into her home. She died at home in Grafton from uterine cancer in 1946 and is buried with her husband in Bluemont Cemetery in Grafton.

George Thomas, son of Humphrey Faris, was born September 15, 1816, at the old homestead. His life covered a span of almost a century. He died May 9, 1909. He was a volunteer at the time of the Mexican war of 1846, but never reached the front. He was past military age when the Civil war came on. The industry of his life was devoted to farming. His wife was Mary Ann Sheets, a native of near West Milford, Harrison County, who died at the age of forty-seven. She was the mother of Samuel S., Harriet, Rachel, Byrd, John and Ellen Faris.
