Maria Fairley (sometimes spelled Farley, Furly) was born Minchinhampton Town, Avoning, Gloucestershire, England in April or September 1797. Records list her home at Hampton Woodhouse, but it could have been Wood House near Hampton. This area was part of the wool manufacturing area of England. She married Hugh Martin, an Irishman and a linen draper, and they sailed to America in 1815. In a published record, Maria’s first daughter, Elizabeth Martin, says her birthdate is 1812. That would have made Elizabeth 3 years old when Maria married Hugh Martin. Maria would have been 18, a minor, which may explain why the marriage required her father’s consent. The question of Elizabeth Martin’s birth is central because there is a possibility that Hugh Martin was not her father. Maria appears to have been an unwed mother and the marriage may have been one of convenience. Hugh Martin is not found in records for New Orleans, Albany or New York, New York after they arrive in America. Some family records list Maria as widowed, but Hugh Martin’s death cannot be placed even though family records state he died in New Orleans. Maria married Thomas Bigsby Jarvis, son of Thomas Jarvis and Mary Howe, in 1821. Thomas Bigsby Jarvis was born September 21, 1797 in Bethlehem, Albany Co., New York. He married first Rachael Jones on April 5, 1817. They had one son who was born February 18, 1818, and Rachael died 3 months later. Thomas had two brothers and a sister: John Clark Jarvis, William Jarvis, and Louise Ann Jarvis.

By her second marriage to Thomas Bigsby Jarvis, Maria had Ann Fairley, Mary Howe, William Henry, and Sarah Clark Jarvis.

Maria and her daughter Anne Farley Jarvis co-owned the Sea View House of Highlands, Monmouth, New Jersey in 1857.
