Claire grew up in Groton, CT, spending summers in Warwick, MA where her parents had a cottage and ran a hotdog stand at Moores Pond (until 1963). She was graduated from Robert E. Fitch Senior High in 1966, and then got a BA, MA, and PhD at the University of Connecticut, the last in General-Experimental Psychology. She taught at Lake Forest College for 18 years, then for 10 years in the Faculty of Human Movement Sciences at the (then called) Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, The Netherlands. Her Dutch language skills were excellent, even if she must say so herself. She returned to UConn in 2001, where she did research and some teaching until her retirement in 2012. In her scientific career she published over a hundred theoretical and empirical articles on vision, control of action, and the ecological approach in cognitive science. In 1969 she married Robert J. Michaels. They were amiably divorced in 1982; Claire kept the name Michaels, fancying, improbably, that she was already famous. She married again in 2004, among the first when gay marriage was legalized in Massachusetts, to Jean Marinelli Haskell. With Jean came two daughters and, ultimately three grandkids who loved "Grandma camp" at Moores Pond every summer, and major individual trips to Alaska, Hawaii, and TBD. In retirement, as before, Claire and Jean enjoyed golf, home grape-growing and winemaking, and tennis.
