From The History of Rutland, Vermont 1761-1861 by Dawn D. Hance, In 1794 the Smith brothers, John and William, had a shop in Rutland where they were making four, eight, and ten and twenty penny nails. William left prior to 1799 but John carried on the trade with Emerson Farmer and Elias Smith in 1803 and 1804. By 1807 John Smith had settled in Johnstown, New York. Nothing more is mentioned about Emerson Farmer. 1
