Biography

Robert Johnson Farmer was born on April 9, 1898 in Hartville, Missouri to Arthur Franklin Farmer and Mary Ann Cantrell Farmer. Robert Johnson Farmer was the youngest so of Arthur Franklin Farmer and Mary Ann Cantrell Farmer. He was born and raised in Hartville, Missouri.

Robert Johnson Farmer received his education in Hartville, Missouri and taught at No. Three School. He had a natural gift with math and kept books and did tax forms for many people in Wright County, Missouri, including Laura Ingalls Wilder. He also served as Wright County Assessor for a time. He loved the Ozarks.

Robert Johnson Farmer married Modest Roberta Beckham (August 9, 1905-November 18, 1995) on October 16, 1925 in Hartville, Missouri. She was the daughter of James Monroe Beckham and Ida Mae Oliver Beckham. She was born and raised in Hartville, Missouri.

Robert Johnson Farmer and Modest Robert Beckham Johnson settled on a farm near Hartville, Missouri. To this union, four children were born.

Robert Johnson Farmer loved the Ozarks in Missouri and always regretted his move to California in 1944. Robert had contracted rheumatic fever as a young adult which did permanent damage to his heart. The family hoped that the milder weather in California might be easier for him yet he still struggled much of he remainder of his life to stay active.

Robert Johnson Farmer worked for a few years for Waterman Foundry in Exeter, California before becoming totally disabled around 1950. Still he pushed himself to stay active by gardening, walking, writing poetry and doing income tax returns for people.

Robert Johnson Farmer passed away on September 14, 1955 in Tulare County, California. He is buried at the Exeter District Cemetery in Tulare County, California.
