He had a natural gift with math and kept books and did tax forms for many people in Wright County, Missouri, including Laura Ingalls Wilder. He also served as Wright County Assessor for a time. He loved the Ozarks.

The family hoped that the milder weather in California might be easier for him yet he still struggled much of he remainder of his life to stay active.
Robert Johnson Farmer worked for a few years for Waterman Foundry in Exeter, California before becoming totally disabled around 1950. Still he pushed himself to stay active by gardening, walking, writing poetry and doing income tax returns for people.
Robert Johnson Farmer passed away on September 14, 1955 in Tulare County, California. He is buried at the Exeter District Cemetery in Tulare County, California.
