Biography

Melba Farmer Thorne peacefully passed away at Apple Village Assisted Living Center in Layton, Utah on September 9, 2008 surrounded by her family. She resided at 195 North 200 East in Kaysville, Utah at the time of her death.

She was born in Magna, Utah to Wallace and Evelyn Farmer on October 20, 1916. She graduated from Cyprus High School and attended a nurses training school in San Diego, California. She returned home and met the love of her life, DeWayne Charles Thorne. They were married on August 9, 1937 in Magna, Utah. They were later married for time and all eternity and sealed as a family on June 3, 1959 in the Salt Lake Temple. She and her husband were long-time residents of Kaysville. When DeWayne retired from Hill Air Force Base, they embarked on their missionary and temple service. Their five missions included North Carolina, Tonga, England, Philippines, and Colorado with interludes of being Temple Ordinance Workers at the Ogden and Bountiful Temples between each mission. Melba loved to take pictures and make scrapbooks. She also loved to do any kind of handi-work, including knitting, crocheting, and crafts. Many in her family were the recipients of her skills. She enjoyed sharing the things she had made with others. She also enjoyed canning the fruits and vegetables DeWayne grew.

Melba is preceded in death by her husband, DeWayne, her parents, a brother-in-law, and two great-granddaughters. She is survived by a sister, Beth Ahlquist of Magna, Utah; and two brothers, Wally Farmer of Kearns, Utah; and Darrell Farmer of Pueblo, Colorado. Also surviving are their children: Lynn (Ruth Ann), Syracuse, Utah; Dennis (Lee), Ogden, Utah; Rick (LaNita), Monument, Colorado; Larry (Judy), Bountiful, Utah; and Heitonga (Randy) Maynes, Riverside, California; 20 grandchildren; 59 grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
