John Farmer lost his brother Thomas, in the
Lundhill Colliery Explosion on 19-Feb-1857
John was born in 1829. He is the son of Robert Farmer and Hannah Battison. He was christened on 6 September 1829 at Wath upon Dearne, Yorkshire.[1]
In the 1841 Census, taken on the night of 6 June 1841, John was one of seven children of Thomas and Hannah, ranging in age from 13 years to one month old. By 12 January 1842, just over six months later, both parents had died and the children had become orphans. Of the six boys, four stayed local, two of whom (John and Thomas) later died in large mining accidents, and two emigrated to the USA. The one girl, Jane, was a servant in the 1851 Census and then her trail runs cold.
John married Harriet Beck in 1851 at Rotherham, Yorkshire.[2]
John was killed 12 December 1866 in the Oaks Colliery disaster, Barnsley Yorkshire[3][4] This was a series of explosions that killed more than 380 miners and rescuers, making it the worst colliery or mining disaster in England and second in the UK, after the Welsh Senghenydd Colliery Disaster. He was buried on 16 December 1866 at St Paul Churchyard, Monk Bretton, Yorkshire.
