Biography

Maria Caterina Farnese, Principessa di Parma e Piacenza, was born 18 February 1615 at Parma, the daughter of Ranuccio I Farnese, Duca di Parma e Piacenza, and his wife, Donna Margherita Aldobrandini, of the family of the Principi di Rossano.

She married at Parma 11 January 1631, as his first wife, Francesco I d'Este, Duca di Modena e Reggio. He was the eldest surviving son of Alfonso III d'Este, Duca di Modena e Reggio, and his wife, Isabella, Principessa di Savoia, and was born 6 September 1610. He succeeded on the abdication of his father, as Duca di Modena e Reggio in 1629.

Francesco and Maria Caterina had eight children;

  1. Alfonso, born and died 1632;
  2. Alfonso IV, born 2 February 1634 at Modena, succeeded his father as Duca di Modena e Reggio;
  3. Isabella, born 3 October 1635 at Modena, married there 18 February 1664, Ranuccio II Farnese, Duca di Parma e Piacenza, and died at Colorno 21 August 1666;
  4. Eleonora, born 1639, died young 1640;
  5. Almerico, born 8 May 1641 at Modena, served in the French army and died at Paris, 14 November 1660;
  6. Eleonora, born 1642, became a Carmelite nun under the name of Suor Maria Francesca dello Spitio Santo 12 January 1676, Priora del Monastero di Nostra Signora del Carmine di Modena 1692, and died at Modena 24 February 1722;
  7. Maria, born 8 December 1644 at Modena, married the widower of her sister Isabella; Ranuccio II Farnese, Duca di Parma e Piacenza, and died at Parma 20 August 1684;
  8. Teobaldo, born 1646, died as an infant.

Maria Caterina died at Sassuolo 25 July 1646, perhaps of the effects of childbirth.

Her husband married twice more, including as his second wife, Maria Caterina's sister Vittoria Farnese.[1]
