Biography

James Farnham was born on February 16, 1836, [1] to Harley and Mary Farnham of Tunbridge, Vermont.

In 1850, James (14) lived with his parents and older sister Mary (24) on the family farm in Tunbridge, Vermont.[2]

At the time of the 1860 census, James (24) lived with his father Harley (67), his older sister Mary (26) and Mary's husband Edmund Conant (30), an immigrant from Canada.[3]

On June 12, 1860, James married Asaneth "Sena" Folsom in Tunbridge, Vermont.[4] The couple would have at least four known children, including:

1. Henry (1861-1917), m. 27 Feb 1887, Ida Hersman (1868-1960)
2. Clara (1863-1944), m. 30 Jun 1885, Abijah Whitney (1857-)
3. Fred (1864-1871), d. age 7
4. Eva (1876-1950), m. 1899, Walter K. Howe (1871-1963)

James enlisted in Company D, Vermont 12th Infantry Division of the Union Army on August 23, 1862, commissioned 1st Lieutenant on October 2, 1862, and mustered out on July 14, 1863, at Brattleboro, Vermont.[5]

In 1870, James was 34 years old and living with wife Asenath (31), their three children - Henry (9), Clancey (7) and Fred (6) - and James's father Harley Farnham (77), in Tunbridge, Vermont.[6]

In 1880, Asenath (41) and James (44) lived on their farm in Tunbridge, Vermont, with their children - Henry (19), Clara (17) and Eva (3) - plus Asenath's older sister, Hannah Folsom (45).[7]

In 1900, Sena (60) and James (64) lived on their farm in Tunbridge, Vermont, with their children - Henry (39), Henry's wife Ida (32), their children - Grace (12), Willie (10), Bessie (7) and John (2) - Sena's sister Hannah (66) and farm hand Frank Ellis (16).[8]

In 1910, Sena (70) and James (74) lived on their farm in Tunbridge, Vermont, with their son Henry (48), Henry's wife Ida (41), and their children William (20), Bessie (17), John Clyde (12), Mabel (7) and Gladys (2).[9]

James passed away on April 10, 1916, in Tunbridge, Vermont.[1] He is buried in Tunbridge Village Cemetery, Tunbridge, Orange County, Vermont, USA.[1]
