Biography

Miles was born about 1788 to Simeon (Simon) Farr, in either Hampshire County, MA., (possibly near Cummington or Worthington where his parents were married in 1771); or near Middlebury, VT. where his father shows up in 1790 as a Charter Member of the Congregational Church. I have found no birth record for him , but he appears in the Will of Simon Farr as his son, and his death record in Vermont Vital Records shows he was born in Ferrisburgh, VT. (just north of Middlebury) where we know Simon and his first wife Mary Bates settled when they first came to VT.

Miles married Pamelia FERRIS in Middlebury, VT. on 8 Feb. 1810. After she died on 21 Dec. 1853, he married again (I've never found the marriage record) to a woman who appears as Sarah J. Farr in his will. I believe he had his 11 or 12 children with Pamelia, since thy are all born before she died: 1) Alfred A. Farr, Rev. (bn: 29 Aug. 1810), 2) William A. Farr (bn: 1812), 3) Sarah A. (Farr) Wright (bn: 1814), 4) Marilla (Farr) Sumner (bn: 10 May 1817), 5) FREEMAN H. (bn: 24 Nov. 1818), 6) Mary Ann Farr (bn: 1820), 7) Lyman B. Farr (bn: 15 March 1823), 8) Samuel Farr (bn: 1824), 9) Charles W. (bn: 1828), 10) Harriett Haight (bn: 3 Oct. 1829), and possibly 11?) Francis J. Farr (b: 1841), and possibly 12?) A 10 month old child named Alice appears in the 1850 census living in Miles's house, but many family members live there at that time & Alice is not identified as Mile's child.

(Regarding the above potential child of Miles & Pamelia: Francis J. Farr - born in 1841. In the 1850 census of Miles's household there are 2 9 year old boys (Franklin & Francis) who are noted as twins, but according to Vermont Vital Records, Francis was born to Miles on 13 Nov. 1841, & Franklin I. Farr was born to Miles's son William A. on 22 Nov. 1841. Ten years later in the 1860 Census both Francis & Franklin are 19 & living with William A. Farr in a separate household where they show as "Laborers," not as sons. Another confusing point (& one that makes me question whether Francis IS the child of Miles & Pamelia, is that he is the ONLY child who Miles does not mention in his will. This seems very peculiar, so perhaps those boys were twins & both boys of William?)

Miles died in New Haven, VT. in 1866.
