Benton Farrar, the oldest son of Christopher and Mahala, was born 17 Feb 1842, in Topsfield, Washington, ME [1]. He fought in the Civil War as a Private in Company H, Sixteenth Regiment, Maine Infantry. He was captured while on skirmish line near Grove Church, Virginia, on 6 June 1864. He was paroled, missing 3 month's pay apparently; he was discharged 31 July 1865, having served 3 years (2). Family lore says that Benton came home to Maine after the War but, after a short stay, returned to the South and was never heard from again (3).
