SHIPPING INTELLIGENCE
ARRIVED
December 24 - Eagle ship, 1045 tons, Francis Boyce commander from Liverpool, 18th September. Passengers (cabin) Mr and Mrs Farrar and family,
Another old colonist has joined "the great majority," namely, Mr. W. H. Farrar, who expired at his residence in Williams-road, Toorak, on Tuesday morning at the advanced age of 72. Mr. Farrar was born in Halifax, Yorkshire, in 1807, and was bought up to business in Leeds. He came to Melbourne in 1851, where in connexion with a partner in London he commenced business. Some years afterwards this connexion waes severed, and Mr. Farrar's eldest son was admitted into the firm; which has had since its first establishmont a uniformly successful career. About 18 months ago the two younger sons were admitted as partners, and Mr. Farrar took advantage of the opportunity to retire from active participation in the affairs of the firm. In commercial circles Mr Farrar was highly esteemed as an upright and honourable man, and gained the warm affection of his friends.
He was of a most unassuming and gentle disposition, and never ventured into the stormy sea of politics. In 1858 he was elected president of the Chamber of Commerce, and was a justice of the peace for nearly 15 years. In 1863, and again in 1866, Mr Farrar visited England, and on the latter occasion remained with a portion of his family for nearly six years. A few weeks ago Mrs Farrar died, and he never rallied from the blow inflicted by her loss. He gradually sank in health and spirits, and passed away on the day abovementioned.
