Biography

Mathew Farrell had a hard life. Born in Ireland in 1834, he lost both parents as a young child. At age 6, he emigrated to the USA with an uncle. He married and had two children, but then lost his wife in 1862. From that year through 1865, he fought in the Civil War, emerging with both injuries and illnesses that largely disabled him for the remaining 57 years of his life. Here are the details...

Mathew was born in Ireland in 1834 [1] [2], the son of John Farrell (bef.1816-aft.1834) and Mary (Fagan) Farrell (bef.1816-aft.1834). [3] According to family tradition, his middle name was Patrick, but no documentation has yet been located to verify that.

Mathew emigrated to the USA at age 6, accompanied by an uncle, his parents having died before then. [2]

By 1856, he had married Ann (Flynn) Farrell (abt.1825-1862). He had two children with her before she died in 1862: Marie Farrell (1856-abt.1944) and John Henry Farrell (abt.1858-1944) [4]. [5]

Matthew enlisted in the Union Army on August 12, 1862 in Company I, 35th Regiment of Iowa Volunteers. [6] [7] [8] He was captured on July 11, 1863 while out foraging at Jackson, Mississippi. He was paroled at City Point, Virginia on August 21, 1863 and reported to Camp Parole, Maryland on August 22, 1863. [9] He was admitted to the hospital at that time and then sent to Benton Barracks and returned to the field on September 11, 1863. On 1 Jun 1864, he was made a wagoner, a skilled position responsible for wagons and horses, but possibly also more appropriate given his long-term knee injury. [9] He was mustered out on August 10, 1865 at Davenport, IA. During the Civil War, John and Maria lived with Ann's parents John and Sabina Flynn. [10]

After the war, and probably about 1867, he married Jane Almond, and they had three children together: William, Thomas [11] , and Catherine Jane ("Kate") [12]. [13]

By 1880, they had moved to Platte County, Nebraska. [14] Early that year, Mathew's daughter Maria died in Wyoming, shortly after giving birth to her fifth child. Her husband, Michael Boyle, brought her body by train to Platte County for burial and brought their five young children to live there, where the children were partly raised by Mathew and Jane. [15]

Michael already had already obtained a land grant here and Mathew obtained a grant for an adjacent farm [16], and he and Jane appear to have remained there until Jane's death in 1907. [17] [18]

After Jane died, Mathew filed for benefits under his Civil War pension [8] and moved to the Sailors' and Soldiers' Home in Grand Island, Nebraska, where he lived for the last several years of his life. [19] He died there in 1922,. [3] and is buried at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Platte Center, Nebraska. [20] [21] [22]

Mathew's will [23] was probated in Hall County. [24]

Research Notes

Get Boyle kids straight, including 1880 census (5 children). Still need to research other land records, find more complete documentation of Civil War service, including pension file. Add Thomas land grant. Link to WikiTree profiles of those mentioned in this profile. Go through this profile and associated timeline for other loose ends that point to documentation or people not already incorporated. Probably much more.

Sources

  1. Birthdate: Mathew Farrell was the recipient of a Civil War pension, starting in 1877. An 1890 law made him eligible for an increased pension, based in part on his age. Because he had no formal documentation of his birth date, he filed a deposition in 1905, under oath, stating that he was born 4 Mar 1834 in Ireland. This matches most census records, including 1900, when actual birth months were recorded. However, many genealogists show his birth year as 1831. This is presumably based on three sources: his death certificate, his headstone, and his Find-a-Grave record. But the death certificate would have been the source for the other two records, and the death certificate states that the birth year was calculated from his age. Thus a single error in his age by either the informant or the signer of the death certificate could have caused these three sources to both agree and to be in error.
  2. 2.0 2.1 Deposition of Birthdate: Mathew Farrell, Deposition of Birthdate (untitled in document), 26 Jul 1905, in Soldier's pension, application no. 234814, certificate no. 250069; service of Mathew Farrell (Pvt., Co. Partial transcription: Comes now Mathew Farrell, of lawful age who being first duly sworn deposes and days [sic] that he is the applicant for increase of pension by virtue of and under the act of 1890 June 27th and who is now drawing pension certificate No 250,069. That he is now past 70 years of age and intitled to said increase as asked for, that he was born on the 4th day of March 1834 in Ireland, that it is impossible for him to furnish a Church record of his birth, in this American Country, it is also impossible to furnish at this time any Bible record as his parents were both dead before this affiant was six years old when he came to this Country with an uncle who is long since died, and he has not seen or known of any such record ever being kept by any one. That while a young man he inlisted in the army of America and at that time was marked as 27 years of age when in fact he was 28 past. as is shown by his discharge having inlisted in 1862.
