Clyde was married twice. On 2 Sep 1908 he married Henretta Hesslingh (also listed as Gelhardina Wilhelmina Henretta Hesslingh) in Carroll, Iowa. The 1910 US Census indicates that he had been married 1 year, however he living with his parents without Henretta.[3][4]On 3 Jan 1914 Clyde married Anna May Ranniger in Shelby, Iowa.[5]
Clyde and Anna were the parents of three children:
Kenneth Clyde, born 23 Dec 1917 Audubon Iowa, died 4 Jan 2001
Dean Wendel, born 1 May 1920 Carroll Iowa, died 18 Mar 1973
Deloris Ann, born 31 Jan 1924 Carroll Iowa, died 5 Nov 1931 Carroll Iowa
Clyde started working for the telephone company when he was just out of school. Starting as a lineman, he worked up to manager.[6]He was a manager of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company office in Carroll from 1924 until his retirement in 1954. He was one of the few telephone men of Iowa who participated in three cutovers in one city. In 1910 he helped change telephones from the magneto type to common battery in preparation for conversion to the dial system; in 1915 he carried telephone apparatus from express wagons and helped install emergency phones for use while new system was being connected; then in June 1952 when the conversion was made to the new dial system, Clyde had overall responsibility for ensuring installations of new equipment were complete and the system up and operating.[7]
In May 1954 Clyde and Anna took a three week vacation to California. They stopped at Council Bluffs for an overnight visit with Clyde's brother Raymond and his wife Helen, and then the two couples travelled together for a brother's reunion in California. [8] In attendance will be the five living brothers.
He passed away on 17 May 1969 in Des Moines, Iowa and was buried with wife Anna in the Carroll City Cemetery.[9][10][11]
