Biography

Ireland Native
Patrick Farrelly was born in Ireland.

Patrick Farrelly was born in Garriston, County Dublin, Ireland, around 1818 (going by his age on emigration), the son of James Farrelly.

He married Mary Carroll, a dairymaid, in Ireland, before they emigrated to the Colony of New South Wales as Bounty Immigrants.

Patrick and Mary arrived in the Colonies on the 16th December 1840, aboard the Lady McNaughton, his occupation stated as labourer, his religion as Roman Catholic, and also stated was that he could both read and write. Those attesting to his good character were his father-in-law, Miles Carroll, and a Cornelius Sullivan. These same two also attested to Mary's good character.[1]

Once they were settled in New South Wales, the children started arriving, nine in all – two daughters, and seven sons:

  1. James Joseph (1841–1930)
  2. Catherine (1845–1929 (Ryan))
  3. John Joseph (1847–1889)
  4. Patrick (1849–?)
  5. Michael (1852–1867)
  6. Bernard (1853–1855)
  7. Mary Theresa (1855–1945 (Partridge))
  8. Joseph (1859–1941)
  9. Austin (1861–1925)

In 1861 Patrick was listed as living at 1 Gloucester Street, occupation as stevedore. By 1866 he was listed as the proprietor of Farrelly's Bond Store and Wharf at Pottinger Street, Miller's Point, Sydney, with 3 Gloucester Street as his private residence.[2] Farrelly's Wharf had been appointed as a "Sufferance Wharf" by January 1862.[3]

Patrick Farrelly passed away on the 3rd December 1872, in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, aged 53 years, of what appears to have been "diarrhæn prostration" of five weeks duration,[4] and was interred in Petersham Cemetery on the 5th.

Patrick's occupation as given on his death certificate is "Wharfinger" (owns a wharf, see Farrelly's Wharf Sydney). The informant was his son James Farrelly, who was living at the corner of Union and George Streets. No Minister is listed, but the witnesses were named as James Farrelly, and Patrick Farrelly. The deceased was noted to have been in the Colonies for about 30 years, had married in Ireland, had been married for about 20 years. His wife was recorded as Mary Carroll. The certificate lists five male children, and two female children as living, and two males as deceased (which would be Bernard and Michael).

Twelve years after his death, Farrelly's Wharf was sold for £32,000, presumably to fulfil the conditions of his Will as the youngest of his children had, by 1882, come of age.[5]
