Biography

Anne Farringdon was the daughter of Charles Farringdon and his wife Margery Stukeley.[1][2] She was born about 1522 based on her parents marriage about 1521 and her own marriage by July 1540.
She was married to Thomas Dowrich by 12 July 1540 when his father demised land to Thomas and Anne his wife. This was likely part of a marriage settlement. The land included the moieties of Stockleigh English, Wulvedon, Langbear, Thorneworthy and Drakeworthy. Additionally, it was agreed that that after the death of his father and mother that the premises in Dowriche, North Credy, Bynhole, Hatherlegh, Plymouth, Plympton Prior and Earls and Lipston should remain to Thomas their son and his heirs. They had eight children.
Anne died before her husband as she was noted as deceased in his will as dated 7 April 1590. In his will, he requested burial within the free Chapple of St Swithin of Sandford in the parish of Crediton near his deceased wife.

Birth

Estimate based on her parents marriage about 1521 and her own marriage in 1540.

Married: Thomas Dowrich before 12 July 1540 when his father settled land on Thomas and Anne his wife.
Children of Thomas Dowrish and Anne Farringdon:
  1. Grace Dowrich. Born say 1540. She married as his second wife Robert Gye of Dodderidge and Prowse between 1555 and 1566. She was probably dead by 1587 when named in her sister Elizabeth's will, and certainly dead by 1590 when her father wrote his will.
  2. Elizabeth Dowrich. Born say 1542 based on her marriage. She married John Northcott, Gent. by settlement dated 10 December 1562. Her will helpfully names a number of siblings. Elizabeth was buried 1 November 1587 at Crediton, having written her Will on 3 October, and proved 17 November 1587.
  3. Walter Dowrish, Esq. Born about 1544/5 based on his admittance to the Middle Temple on 12 March 1564/5. He married Mary Carew (1550–1604), daughter of Dr. George Carew, Dean of Windsor, third son of Sir Edmund Carew, Baron Carew, of Mohuns Ottery in the parish of Luppitt, Devon, by his wife Catharine Huddesfield, a daughter and co-heiress of Sir William Huddesfield (died 1499) of Shillingford St George in Devon. Walter died by June 1592 when administration of his will was granted.
  4. William Dowrich. Born about 1546. Not named in the Visitations but likely the second son based his placement in his father's will.
  5. Clement Dowrich. Born about 1548. Not named in the Visitations but likely the third son based his placement in his father's will.
  6. Rev. Hugh Dowrish. Born about 1553 as he matriculated at Oxford aged 19 in 1572. Rector of Lapford and Honiton. He married Anne Edgecombe (born before 1560–1596) a poet and historian, a daughter of Sir Richard Edgecombe of Mount Edgcumbe in Cornwall. His death was recorded in the Bishop's register as occuring on 7 Sep 1599.
