According to the death certificate filed in Buncombe County in June of 1940, David died of atalectasis (pulmonary failure) at 3 hours of life. Whether he was premature or not is not noted, nor is it known through family anecdotes.

Again, according to the death certificate, he was buried at the Tabernacle cemetery in Black Mountain, North Carolina. (Find a Grave has no listing for him, but the full list of graves at Tabernacle from 1837–1994 has him listed along with the rest of the known family members.)

When Kathy Farrow received her Grandmother Farrow's papers upon her grandmother's death, she found David's birth certificate. She had originally been told that David was still born (by her father, Stephen), but both birth and death certificates show that he was alive. She was subsequently told that only her grandfather ever saw the child—her grandmother was never allowed to.
