Gateway ancestor is a term used in genealogy. It means that when researching a family tree you discover that one of your ancestors is descended from royalty, the aristocracy, or landed gentry.

Hi! I saw your post on Casey's profile. There's "Gateway Ancestors", as used by the Magna Carta Project to mean a pre-1700 immigrant to America whose descent from a surety baron is documented by Douglas Richardson,* and then there's "gateway ancestor" - the generic term for (usually) the immigrant ancestor who is the "gateway" to one or more royal/nobel/notable ancestors. (See the Magna Carta Project's Glossary.)

Cheers, Liz ~ co-leader, Magna Carta Project

* Richardson documents the ancestry of 240 or so colonial Americans in his 2011 Magna Carta Ancestry & adds a few more in Royal Ancestry (2013). See WikiTree's source pages for them at Space:Royal Ancestry and Space:Magna Carta Ancestry.

Hi Carol,

According to the Relationship Finder we are 14th Cousins Once Removed. Thomas ( Andrews ) Andrew is your 14th Great-Grandfather and my 13th. Although the Connection is Distant I just wanted to say, Hi Cousin.

Hi Carol,

Carol and Robin are 9th cousins

I saw your note on Samuel Lincoln's profile...I, too, learned about the relationship to Honest Abe, but, also, in my line, to Daniel Boone! Glad to meet you, cousin.

Hi Carol

You've been a member for about a week so I thought I would check in to see how it's going. Have the How-Tos been helpful or left you with questions? Most of us have questions after all that information!

I want to help! Click my name, send me a private message or ask in the comment section of my page. Sometimes links don't work in emails. If that's happened to you, check the public comments on your profile. The links will work from there.

PS To find reliable sources for your profiles, go to the Family Tree & Tools tab; select Genealogy Research and scroll down near the bottom of that list and select Research with RootsSearch. There are over 20 websites to access from there.

Hi Carol,

Thanks for taking the Pre-1700 Quiz!

Because pre-1700 ancestors are shared by many descendants, coordinating with others is essential. You can learn more about joining the community in How To #3 and in the Project FAQ.

Based on your tags the Mayflower Project may fit your research focus. If not, use the Pre-1700 Projects list to review other possibilities. Read the goals and tasks of the projects and join those which are a good fit.

Have questions? Ask in the comments section of my profile.

Hi Carol, Hope all is well. You are now the profile manager of Sarah (Lincoln) Shaw. I know you'll take good care of her. Janis
Hi Carol,

A warm welcome to WikiTree. You are now a full member and can add your family to the big tree!

Click here to start with our New Member How-To Pages. They will save you time, energy and frustration as you add your family profiles.

Hope you enjoy WikiTree as much as I have. You never know when you will find a lost family member or ancestor. Or maybe find a hidden family secret about an ancestor. Genealogy to me is like being a detective looking for clues into the past.

Sometimes links don't work in emails. If that's happened to you, check the public comments on your profile as the links will work from there.

Please let me know if you have any questions. I'm always happy to help!
