This profile page has been adopted by Teresa Fortenberry (10 / 2016). Because there are so many variations on the spelling for Fortenberry, Faulkenberry, Falkenburg... etc, it is difficult to sort the correct surnames into family groups. I will try!

This group of Falkenburg / Valkenburg / Faulkenburg families are MOST OFTEN spelled Faulkenberry through their documents.

PLEASE USE THIS PAGE WITH CAUTION!

In the documentation found on Fold3 for David Faulkenberry (spelled as it is on the petition), David claims to be 85 or 86. The given date for the document is 6 September 1832 which would lead us to believe that David's birth year was very near 1746. The documents and/or petitions are several pages in length and contain some very interesting information concerning David Faulkenberry.

  • He was born in Lancaster county, South Carolina.
  • His residence at the time of the interview was Rutherford county, Tennessee, where he has resided since 1808.
  • He lived for a few years in Clarke county, Georgia (which was probably some time before 1808).
  • His Revolutionary War service included the battle of Hanging Rock, South Carolina. He does name several of his commanding officers, including Captain John Kennington (spelled Canington on the document). Captain Kennington's troops were mustered under the command of Col. Joseph Kershaw. William Jasper Fortenberry, the son of David Faulkenberry's brother, John, married Violette Kennington, sister to John Kennington.

Posted here is ONE page, of many, concerning the pension application for David Faulkenberry. This one is a statement given by David's son, Jacob Faulkenberry about the condition of his father. Jacob is about 62 years old and testifies that he remembers his father talking about the Revolutionary War. David was present when Gates was defeated. He was ordered to scour the countryside and bring back anything of use from the retreating army. Towards the bottom of the page Jacob gives an account of a terrible incident in which Tories attacked his father because he "sided with the Whigs". They crippled both of David's hands "cut him to pieces with their swords" and shot him which left a ball in his arm.

In the right hand column can be seen the image of a portion of the 1790 Lancaster County, South Carolina census. This is one page and shows how difficult it can be to read some of the census records. Obviously, over the years, some damage has occurred to this record, but we are fortunate to be able to read the record for our Fortenberry / Faulkenberry / Faulkenburgh families. The next image (the one marked "close") is a portion of the preceding document (same page) showing David "Faulkenburgh". In this second image, which has been darkened in the foreground and lightened in the background, the names of these Faulkenberry men can be clearly seen. Robert Faulkenburgh is first, next is Widow Faulkenburgh, next is listed David Faulkenburgh and last in this group is Henry Faulkenburgh. If you look a little lower on the section, you will find Jacob Faulkenburgh. Interestingly, just above Jacob Faulkenburgh is George Eubans (most likely, Eubanks). John Faulkenberry, brother of David, marries Hannah.... possibly Hubanks (Eubanks).

  • David Faulkenberry moves to Tennessee by 1820 as he is listed on the Rutherford County, Tennessee census as "David Fauttenbery"
  • In 1840, David Faulkenbury is listed in the household of William Pace in Cannon County, Tennessee, with his age given as 101. William Pace was married to David Faulkenberry's daughter, Isabella. It is obvious that David's given age for this census is incorrect. However, the fact that David Faulkenberry is still listed as living in 1840, 94 is certainly a long time to live with the injuries he sustained in the Revolutionary War. William Pace becomes the administrator of David Faulkenberry's estate by the October 1841 court session in Rutherford County, Tennessee.
