Mary Eliizabeth Faulkner was born in Westminster, Middlesex, England[1] The eldest daughter of Alfred Smith Faulkner and Mary Roper who were married the previous year in the Isle of Wight[2]
She was Christened on November 4th, at St James church Picadilly. The details of which give her birth date as 20th May[3]
In the 1841 census we find Mary at only 18 days old with her parents, at 107 Regents Street, St James.Westminster. Her father is shown as a draper[4]
By 1846 Mary had three siblings Margaret Annie Faulkner, Alfred Morland Faulkner and Frank Faulkner
In 1849 her brother, Frank, died[5]
In 1851, Mary is now aged 9 and is still residing with her parents at the same address in St James, Middlesex, England. Her father is still a draper and, as well as two siblings, Margaret and Alfred, there are also five other persons present, two draper's assistants, a porter, and two servants, the youngest of which is from the Isle of Wight, where Mary's parents were married.[6] Later that same year, Mary's mother died and was buried at Brompton Cemetery on 15 Nov 1851[7]
In 1861, according to the census, Mary is still living at home aged 19 with her father who is now described as a widower and is aged 50 and still a draper. With them in the household are Mary's sister Margaret, her Aunt Emma and five other residents presumed to be workers for the business[8]
On 1 November 1861, Mary's husband to be William Henry Hussey made an Allegation before the ecclesiastical authority at St Gabriel Pimlico, his home parish for a licence to marry Mary and to make oath that he has obtained the consent of Alfred Faulkner to the marriage as she was a minor. in other words she was under 21 years of age. [9]
In the December quarter 1861, Mary married William Henry Hussey at St Georges Hanover Square, one of the most fashionable churches in London[10]
In the last Quarter of 1862, Mary gave birth to a son, Vivian Hussey in Liverpool, Lancashire[11]
Sadly her husband William died in 1868 after only seven years of marriage[12]
Then on 26 October 1870, her father Alfred died[13]The beneficiaries of the will were Mary and her brother Alfred Morland Faulknertheir father leaving them a sum not exceeding £9000 a not inconsiderable sum.
It seems strange that her son should be born in Liverpool, but this is confirmed in the census of 1871,
In 1871 Mary's son Vivian's place of birth is confirmed when he is found at a Boarding school in Walthamstow, Essex[14] Mary meanwhile is living back with her brother at 107 Regent Street with her brother Alfred Morland Faulkner, whose occupation is shown as Shirt Maker, and Mary is living on Interest of Money, presumably from her legacy from her father's will. She is not shown as a Widow, but as unmarried[15]
By 1881, Mary, now Hussey age 39 and a widow, is living with her unmarried Aunt at 136 Dalling Road, Fulham Sophia Faulkner aged 61, her occupation is stated to be (presumeably the profits from) Leasehold Property[16] Mary's Occupation is difficult to read but could possibly be Mariner's something. Also present in the household is Harry T Faulkner aged 31 and a commercial traveller. Sophia's nephew and Mary's first cousin, who was born in Adelaide South Australia.[17]He was the son of Mary's Uncle Matthew Faulkner and Ellen Louisa Parsons Mary's son, now called Vivian B A Faulkner is also present aged 18 and is an apprentice Seal Engraver.
In the first quarter of 1888, Mary married her first cousin Harry Thomas Faulkner[18]
In 1891, the census tells us that Mary and Harry are still living in Fulham with their Aunt Sophia, who now has Paralysis of Limbs. Curiously, despite her marriage to Harry almost three years earlier, Mary is named as Mary E Hussey (mistranscribed as Hurry on Family Search) and described as a widow. Her husband Harry is there also with the occupation of stationer, as is Mary's son by her first husband, Vivian who is now aged 28 and a Seal Engraver, and on the next page is Margaret E Faulkner who, a week later will become Vivian's wife and Leonard Faulkner, Mary's nephew[19]
On April 13th 1891, Mary's son by her first husband William, Vivian Blair Arnoldi Hussey, married Margaret Emma Faulkner, the neice of his mother's second husband Matthew Faulkner. Her father was Matthew Alfred Faulkner[20]
On 6th March 1892, Mary's Grandson, Sidney Vivian Hussey was born[21]
On the 10th November 1894, Mary's second husband, Harry died at the age of 44[22]In Harry's will and probate of which was granted the same year, his effects said to be worth £147 10s 5d were left to his widow Mary.[23]
In 1901, Mary is living with her Aunt Sophia who is now 81 years old, and living at 57 Agate Rd, Hammersmith, and described as living on own means. Also in the same household are her son Vivian, his wife Margaret and their son Sidney Vivian Faulkner age 9 and a female domestic servant.[24]
Sadly on 10th January 1903, Mary's Aunt Sophia died at the age of 82.[25]She left her effects to Mary Elizabethand her son Vivian[26]
In the 1911 census, Mary aged 69 is found living with her son from her first marriage, Vivian Blair Arnoldi Hussey, his wife, Margaret Emma and their son Sidney Vivian Hussey who is now 19 years old and described as a Seal Engraver's son, learning the business. They are living at 40, Flanchford Road, Shepherds Bush, Hammersmith, London, England[27]

In 1841 when Mary was born, the area where she was born was in The Quadrant, Regent Street, which then, as now, was a very affluent area of London, with only the best stores. They must have been a wealthy family. Indeed her first marriage at St George's Hanover square must have been a splendid affair as it was one of the most fashionable churches of its day for weddings.
I could not ascertain why Mary's son was born in Liverpool, Lancashire.
I was unable to find a reason apart from a transcription error, why Harry Thomas Faulkner is sometimes named as Henry. I know that Harry is often used as a pet name for someone named Henry, but the scan of his Christening in Adelaide Australia available on Family Search clearly names him Harry.
In the 1891 census, the census taker has noted Mary in the name from her previous marriage and referred to her as a widow. This could have been due to accidental misinformation or maybe the information was given by Aunt Sophia and she disapproved of Mary's marriage to her first cousin.
