The Favell Family Crest

Favell Family Crest

Biography

Henry Favell was the son of James Favell and Isabell Warde of Yorkshire, England. He appears in this pedigree that was presented at York, England circa 1666.[1]

Favell Pedigree

Henry Favell was married to Dorothy Wright, the daughter of Christopher Wright of Maltby, Yorkshire, England.[2] The marriage license was issued in 1630. (The same year as his first employer Lord Grandison's death)

Dorothy Wright & Henry Favell Marriage License

Henry Favell and his family have a small mention in a history book about Kirkby Overblow by Harry Speight.[3] The family at one time held some status in the region, but by the time of Henry Favell, the family had lost its hold of Skipby manor and were relegated to being assistants to more important folks. The Henry Favell family lived at Normanton, Yorkshire:

Favell History

Occupation

Henry Favell was Steward to Algernon Percy, the 10th Earl of Northumberland (1602-1668.)[1]

As Percy's steward, Henry Favell would have been an educated man. Henry would have been responsible for managing the financial and real assets of his employer. The work included accounting, managing rent and other income, and keeping track of expenses. It is said that sometimes Stewards were very powerful, and some were even more powerful than the people they served. No doubt, Algernon Percy was an important man. Even today, he has a wikipedia page:

Previous to his service with Algernon Percy, Henry Favell was Secretary to Oliver St John, Lord Grandison. This position seems that it may have been even more prestigious. Oliver, Lord Grandison, was the Lord High Treasurer of Ireland.[2]

Oliver St John, Lord Grandison, also has a wikipedia page:

Henry Favell and his wife Dorothy Wright had six known children. Many records have been found linking the family to the All Saints Church in Normanton, England.[3]. This historic church is said to have been in existence since before 1256.
