Elkanah Fawcett was born in Frederick County, Virginia, 1820, married Margaret Ann in 1846 and lived on a farm in western Frederick County, Virginia, where also operated a saw mill. He was born into a Quaker family and remained a loyal follower of the Society of Friends and attended religious services twice a week for his entire adult life and was a trustee of the Hopewell Friends Meeting in Frederick County.
