Fred attended Marlcliffe Road Junior & Infants Council School, Wadsley between 5 July 1915 and 25 July 1918.[3]His parent/guardian was recorded as: William H Fearn, of 41 Rockley Road. William Henry Fearn was Fred's uncle and it can be assumed that he was acting as Fred's guardian because his parents were unable to cope with their young family. Fred had previously attended Hillsborough school.

Fred was serving in the Army as a driver in the R.A.S.C. when he married Irene (Rene) on 27 March 1937. They were married at the Salvation Army Hall, 205 Portobello Road, Kensington, London, United Kingdom by Salvation Army Major William Day.[4]

Fred and Rene had four children. Their youngest child was Maureen. The couple moved around with Fred's job in the British Army, but eventually settled in the village of Lilleshall, Shropshire from 1956 to the late 1980s when they moved to Donnington, Shropshire.

Fred passed away at the age of 74 on 23 April 1983 at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital, Shrewsbury, Shropshire.[5]
