My first career was in the Royal Navy where I for served for 26 years and qualified as a Chartered Engineer, specialising in systems engineering. As well as spending time at sea in most parts of the world, my work included being a member of the design teams for the Type 23 and Type 45 frigates (the main classes of surface warship in today’s Navy) and I lectured on computer-based systems at the Navy’s engineering college. My second career began in the early days of the World Wide Web. I set up a small company in Plymouth to provide Internet services and to help with the development of computer systems within the NHS for use by health authorities, hospitals and general practitioners. That led to work as an IT project manager in local government where I was involved with the transition to online services across most departments in the City Council. More recently, on a part time basis I supervised research projects being carried out by MSc students at the University of Warwick. Nowadays I am working with other members of my extended family to build an online family archive that we hope can be passed down the generations My other interests include sailing and hill walking. My wife Lynn and I have lived in Plymouth for many years. We have three children and seven grand-children.
