Biography

The son of Horace Fenton Sr. and Virginia (Newell) Fenton, George was born in Milwaukee in 1900.^[1][2][3]

George enlisted in the United States Navy, enlisting on March 3, 1919 and being discharged on May 20, 1922. He served as a Pharmacy Mate 3rd Class.^[4] He returned to Milwaukee after his military service.^[5]

Charles married Audrey (Gouin) Barthels (1891-1957), the daughter of John and Elizabeth Gouin and from Minnesota, when he was 17, marrying in Milwaukee on February 28, 1927.^[6] She had been previously married to Harvey John Barthels, marrying at the age of 18, around 1909, and had a son with him, John A. "Jack" Barthels, born in 1915. In 1930, the couple, including Audrey's son, Jack, lived in Milwaukee and Charles worked as a mechanical engineer for an automatic control company.^[7] Their daughter, Virginia R. Fenton, was born in Milwaukee around 1932.

Charles and Audrey moved west to California, settling in Vallejo, where Charles worked as an electrical engineer for new construction taking place there. ^[8] George passed away in Solano, California at the age of 82,^[9] residing last in St. Helena, California, in Napa County.^[10] He is buried at Saint Helena Public Cemetery.^[11]

Research Notes

George's FindAGrave memorial has a link to a second wife, Myrtle Irene Shepherd (1922-2001), the daughter of Frank W. and Fanny M. Shepherd. It's possible that George remarried after his first wife passed away in 1957, but no public records are found with both of the names. Myrtle also has a second husband linked on her FindAGrave memorial, Ralph Charles Johnson (1919-1993).
