FENWICK, BASIL MIDDLETON, Sergeant, No. 109, A Squadron, 10th West Australian Light Horse, only son of Charles Richard Fenwick, of Ben Rhydding, Yorks, and 26, Park Row, Leeds, Married inst. C.E., F.S.I., by his wife, Margaret, daughter of William Middleton, Solicitor; b. Pool, co. York, 3 Sept. 1885; educated Haileybury College.
Prior to the War he was a prospector at Nannine, Western Australia.
On 5 October 1914 he enlisted in WWI age 29 as a Corporal and served with the 10th Light Horse A Squadron. S/N 109. Next of kin - C C R Fenwick, Penrydding, Yorkshire, England.
He embarked from Fremantle, Western Australia, on board HMAT A47 Mashobra on 8 February 1915.
In May 1915 he was mentioned in routine orders for his gallantry at Quinns Post during a sortie on 30/5/1915 and in defending the position. He received a gunshot wound to his right shoulder as was instrumental in throwing back Turkish bombs.
He was promoted to Sgt on 1/8/1915.
He was killed in action during the Battle of the Nek.
His body was not recovered and his memorial is at the The Lone Pine Memorial (Panel 9), Gallipoli, Turkey.
He is memorialised at Ilkley Cemetery next to his parents.
