Biography
Joseph Fereday was born in Tipton, Staffordshire, England.
Joseph Fereday was born in 1860, at Tipton, Staffordshire, England, the son of James Fereday and Emma Sheldon, his birth being registered in the 2nd Quarter at Dudley.[1]
Joseph was baptised on the 19th August 1860, at St John, Parish of St John, Tipton, Staffordshire.[2]
On the 3rd April 1881 Joseph, an Assistant Master Board School, was living with his family at Richard Street, West Bromwich, Staffordshire. Others home at the time were his father, James, an ironworks labourer, mother, Emma, and his siblings: James (an errand boy), John, William, Albert, and Lydia, all at school.[3]
Joseph Fereday migrated from Staffordshire, England to Victoria, Australia.
At some point Joseph decided to leave home, so he packed up and emigrated to Victoria, Australia, ending up in Toowoomba, Queensland.[4]
Joseph married Ada Gant on the 29th June 1901, in Toowoomba, Queensland.[5]
Joseph and Ada had two known children, Emma Elizabeth (1902 – 1976 (Yarrow)),and Rowland Edward (1905 – 1972).
Having begun his teaching career back in the "old country", Joseph continued as he had begun, eventually becoming headteacher at more than one school (but not at the same time).
The following transfers of State school teachers have been approved: Joseph Fereday, from head teacher, Monkey Waterholes, to head teacher, Sandy Creek ; Herbert Francis Mead, from head teacher, Sandy Creek, to head teacher, Colinton ; Eileen Agnes McGurk, from assistant teacher, Fairney View, to head teacher, Flemington. Approval has been given to the establishment of a State school at Jubilee Vale, via Crow's Nest.
Joseph Fereday passed away on the 6th June 1941, in Toowoomba, Queensland, Australia, aged 81 years.[7]
Joseph was buried in the Drayton and Toowoomba Cemetery, Harristown.[8][9]
In 1944 the family had published an In Memoriam notice in Brisbane's Courier Mail.[10]
