Biography

John Ferguson probably arrived in the Bahama Islands in the summer of 1783 with a group of Loyalists - including the Dumaresque family - who travelled to Abaco from New York. They established the small community of Carleton, just north of Marsh Harbour.

In November 1785, Jonathan Belton, late of the Island of Abaco, was paid three hundred pounds by John Ferguson for all his property in the Bahamas. This consisted of seven slaves, his tract of land, and all improvements to it, on Abaco. Three years later, John obtained grants of land at Leonard Cay and an additional 200 acres on Abaco.

Ann Dumaresque, daughter of Philip Dumaresque and Rebecca Gardiner Dumaresque, married John Ferguson, 3 March 1787, at Christ Church, Nassau, Bahamas. The couple had children - including Rebecca Ferguson, Isabella Ferguson, and James Ferguson.

John Ferguson, Justice of the Peace, died before 1795 - the year his widow married Dr James Gow at Christ Church, Nassau, Bahamas.
