Biography

George Ferguson was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to Van Diemen's Land

George Ferguson is born about 1802 in Scotland.

Note: There is some circumstantial evidence that George was a convict (see Research Notes below), but a descendant of this family tells me that he is not[1]. I currently have no sources to support either hypothesis and will leave the Caledonia category and convict sticker until more evidence surfaces.

By 1835 he is a baker in Goulburn street, Hobart.

Research Notes

There is some uncertainty as to whether George is a convict.

A George Ferguson is transported for the theft of lead pipes to Tasmania on the Caledonia (1), arriving 17th November, 1820. His term is seven years and he is listed as a baker.

Supporting his free origins are his marriage permission (listed as free), and obituaries that name him as a colonist.

DEATHS.
FERGUSON.-On 2nd June, at his residence, No. 41, Goulburn-street, Mr. George Ferguson, baker, in the 66th year of his age. The deceased was an old colonist of nearly half a century's standing. Friends are invited to follow his remains to their resting place on Saturday afternoon, at two o'clock.[17]

The 1842 census[18] has George living with one other - one arrived free, the other is otherwise free - it is impossible to know which is George. George is the head of the household.
