Biography

Angus Ferguson was born 25 December 1832 (See Research Notes)[1], the son of Donald Ferguson and Eunice (Una) MacDonald. The family was likely living in Ruisgarry on Berneray Island in the Hebrides at the time of his birth. When the Harris estate reorganized and reduced the number of crofts around 1845, the family emigrated to Grand River, Cape Breton. [2]

Angus married Catherine MacKinnon in Grand River, Cape Breton, 1 March 1857. [3] The couple settled next door to Angus' older brother Donald in Framboise, where Angus farmed and they raised 3 children, 4 having died in infancy. [4] By the time of the 1881 Canadian Census, the family was living near Glace Bay in Lingan, Cape Breton.[5]

Sometime after the 1881 Census, Catherine passed away and 28 December 1889, Angus married Annabella Morrison in Glace Bay, Cape Breton. [6] Angus and Annabella remained in Glace Bay, where Angus worked as a miner. They are listed there in the 1891 Canada Census with 2 children.[7] and again in 1901.[1]

Angus passed away 21 July 1910 in Glace Bay, Cape Breton at the age of 78. [8]

Research Notes

The 1901 Census lists Angus' birth date as 25 December 1836; however, his death record lists his age as 78 in 1910, which would make his birth year 1831 or 1832. Since 1832 is in line with his age in most Canada census records, we have set that as his birth year.
