Note N135Mary is NOT listed with her family in the 1851 census. She would have been about 13 years old. There is a listing for a Mary Ferguson, age 12 "Visitor" in the household of Niel Brown in entry # 25 (theoretically three doors away from the Fergusons). Besides Neil (Unmarried age 26, shoemaker) the other members of the household include his brother William (Unmarried age 24, farm servant) and a female house servant - Nabella McLeary age 13. [all born in Kilchoman] There is no known record of Mary's birth. Her death record (1900) says she was born in 1851. The 1881 census lists her as 36 which would make her birth year 1845 and somewhat more consistent with her marriage in 1864.

The birth year given on her death record causes a problem with the supposed marriage in 1864 as she would have been only 14 (at most), below the legal age of consent in Scotland which is (and was at this time) 16. There is also the possibility that she lied about her age for the wedding and maintained the deception in the 1881 census. The fact that her first child was not born until 1868 lends some credence to this view.

Part of the town of Govan - Parish of Govan and County of Lanark. Victoria Place 2-7-12 closes with the back premises belonging thereto and the space in front to the center of the Turnpike Road leading to Renfrew. Victoria Street No 1,2,4,6,8,10,12,14 and 16 with the back premises belonging thereto and the space in front to the center of Victoria Street. Length one hundred and fifty yards and breadth one hundred yards.

1. 4 Victoria Street has a "Spirit Shop" on the ground level and flats above. This is the address given for Mary at the time of her marriage in 1864 to Neil McDougall. There is no record of Mary at # 4 in 1861 but the Census does shows an Archibald Ferguson Unmarried age 18 Labourer Born Islay - "Visitor" to # 4 Victoria St ? relation to Mary? (There is no IGI entry for an Archibald Ferguson born Islay 1843+/- 5 ]
