Biography

Constance was born about 1838 or 1839, probably in Ballysillan, county Antrim,[1] the daughter of Thomas Ferguson of Greenville, county Down, and Ryde, Isle of Wight, Esq., and Emma Benyon.

On the 9th December 1862, she married Captain Ennis Richard Henry Twyford in Saugor, India.[2][3]

After her husband's death in India in 1869, Constance's household was enumerated in the 1871 census of England as follows:

- Constance M Twyford, head, widow, age 32, Annuitant, born in Ireland
- Ernest H.S. do., son, age 7, scholar; born in Somerset, Bath
- Lionel T.C. do., son, age 5, do., ...
- Amelia J. Holden, do., ..., age 23, Domestic Servant - Lodge Maid; born in London, Middlesex
- Census place: 2 Alfred Street, Walcot, Bath, Somerset

... Sharing the same house, but enumerated as two additional households, were:

First:
- Mary I. Seridge, servant, unmarried, age 16, General servant; born in Bristol, Somerset
- Mary Herbert, do., ...; born in Whapley, [illegible, possibly “St.” for Somerset]
Second:
- Fanny Francis, head, widow, age 74, Interest of Money; born in Shepton Mallet, Somerset
- Susan P. do., daughter, unmarried, age 37, do.; born in Oakhill, Somerset[4]

Constance Margaret Twyford née Ferguson died during the second quarter ending 30th June 1899 in the registration district of Elham, Kent, aged sixty years.[5]

Research notes

  • The estimated year of birth is inferred from the age recorded in the index of civil registrations of deaths (England). The estimated date of death corresponds to the second quarter of 1899 as per that index.[5]

Ferguson-10063 and Ferguson-7588 appear to represent the same person because: Constance Margaret Ferguson married Capt. Ennis Richard Henry Twyford on the 9th December 1862 in Saugor, India. Capt. Twyford died on the 19th May 1869 in Nandghat, India, and Constance Margaret Twyford née Ferguson died in Elham, Kent during the second quarter 1899.
