During visits to the Colorado Plateau, they made notes on places of interest. Much of the initial archeology done in these areas was based off of these places they noted. This included a decade-long archaelogical survey of an area where there son Ferrell, a toddler in 1916, found a pottery shard which he then gave to his father who reecognized its possible importance[1]
