Thomas was the second son of William Ferrers[1][2] and Philippa Clifford.[3][4] His parents had lands in several counties[5][6] and his birthplace is not known. He was said to be 40 and more at his father's death in 1445 and 50 and more in 1452, pointing to a birth date of between 1392 and 1402.[3][4]
Marriage and Children
Before 1418 Thomas married Elizabeth Freville,[2] daughter of Baldwin Freville[1] and Maud le Scrope.[3][4] They had at least two children:
Thomas held lands in Derbyshire, Essex, Oxfordshire, Staffordshire, Warwickshire and elsewhere.[3][4][7] His marriage brought Tamworth Castle (Tamworth is on the borders of Staffordshire and Warwickshire)[2] on the death of her father in 1418 and other property in Warwickshire and Wiltshire.[3][4][8][9] He paid homage for his wife's inheritance before 27 November 1423.[10]
The Appendix to the 1911 Harleian Society edition of the wrongly names Thomas's older son as John, husband of Maud Stanley.[11] This is a confusion with Thomas's grandson John.
