Biography

Thomas John was born in 1864. He is the son of Thomas Ferris and Elizabeth Collins.

DEATH OF MR. "MOM" FERRIS. - A Popular Sport. One of the most popular sports in Glenelg, in the person of Mr. Thomas ("Mom") Ferris, passed away at his residence, Edison Street, St. Leonards, early on Sunday morning, after a somewhat lengthy illness; The news of Mr. Ferris' death came as a shock to his numerous friends, who held him in high esteem. The deceased gentleman was born in this State some 55 years ago. As a lad he served his apprenticeship to the jewellery trade with Mr. Steiner, who carried on business in Rundle Street on the site at present occupied by Brunkhorst's. He was recognized as an exceptionally high class silversmith, and designed many of the cups which were presented by the late Mr. Barr Smith. After attaining the status of a journeyman, the deceased gentleman turned his attention to sport, and was closely associated with Mr. James Carr for some years in his operations as a turf commission agent. As a young man Mr. Ferris gained some distinction as a cueist, and was one of the foremost amateurs of the State. Eventually he drifted into the professional ranks, winning several important matches. When Harry Roberts, the English champion, was in Adelaide, and while proprietor of the Globe Hotel billiard room, young Ferris came under his notice, and the champion took a great interest in him. About 25 years ago Mr. Ferris came to Glenelg and leased the old Pier Hotel billiard room, which he conducted with success for a time. He left the seaside town for a period, and eventually returned to take charge of the Jetty Hotel room. Twelve months ago he opened the billiard hall in Moseley Street, which he conducted in conjunction with Mr. George Duffield. He was of a particularly kindly disposition, and always took a pleasure in coaching his customers, in negotiating the many intricate shots which make billiards so fascinating. The deceased was a recognized authority on greyhounds, of which he possessed in his. time many valuable specimens, notably Bravo, who won so many stakes, both in this State and Victoria, and the championship of the State in 1897. He also owned Bravo's Last, who was the runner-up of the Waterloo Cup in 1909. Nearly three months ago he was seized with the illness, necessitating an operation, but unfortunately complications set in, and the end came as stated above. He leaves a widow and two sons and a daughter. The funeral took place on. Monday afternoon, the remains being interred in the North Brighton Cemetery. There was a large and representative gathering at the graveside. [1]
