Sarah Ferris was born in 1838 in County Galway, Ireland, the daughter of Christopher Ferris and Bridget Ryan, and sister of Thomas Ferris, Anne (Ferris) Fitzgerald, Maria Ferris, Eliza (Ferris) Dick, Richard Christopher Ferris and John Ferris.
It would seem that her parents lived in County Galway, Ireland from the time of their marriage and at least up to 1846, and Sarah and her siblings were born there, but their place of origin was recorded as being "Islanaden", County Mayo, Ireland on the Ship Passenger List when they emigrated. There is actually no place in Mayo called Islanaden but there is an Islaneady[1] on the route to Westport which at the time was a port in use for emigration so it is likely that this is what was meant. It is interesting to note that Islandeady was the birth place of her mother, so the family possibly moved back there, in preparation to migrate, being in close proximity to the departure port.
Sarah immigrated to Australia aboard the "Beejapore" with her parents and siblings, Thomas, Anne, Maria, Eliza, (Richard) Christopher, John, arriving at New South Wales on 11 February 1853[2].
