Biography

Zachariah Ferris is believed to have been born in Reading England,[citation needed] and became an early settler of Charlestown, Massachusetts. He married Sarah Blood (Blonds, Blouds) 12 Nov 1673 in Charlestown, Massachusetts.[1][2][3] He is believed to have been resident in Bridgeport by 1705.[4]

He participated in the French and Indian war. He and his family resided in Charlestown about 30 years before resettling in Stratford, Connecticut. In August 1710, in anticipation of his participation in the expedition to Port Royal in Canada, he made his will. In April 1711, his family probated the will.[5] Thus it can be inferred that he died in Nova Scotia, on the expedition. Adams-21565 09:35, 7 January 2016 (EST)

It was his son Zachariah Jr who was a founder of New Milford, Connecticut.

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Zachariah by comparing test results with other carriers of his Y-chromosome or his mother's mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known yDNA or mtDNA test-takers in his direct paternal or maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Zachariah:

Hello,

I'm not sure Port Royal was either Nova Scotia nor Canada when this man died there. It was Acadia or New France, wasn't it?

Thoughts?

In 1711, it had already become Annapolis Royal and a British (rather than French) colony. I believe the name of the colony remained Acadia (although that appears to be a bit fuzzy in the quick research done). The peninsular part was formally handed over to Britain in the 1713 Treaty of Utrecht.

On Ancestry I found a photo of a page from " A Genealogy of the Ferris Family", Harriet Scofield, no date, found in the library of Winchester County Historical Society. It contains all the above information about Zachariah Ferris and family.

Can you summarize the info from Scofield?

The Scofield work is in the form of a 1954 typescript. A version of this was published 2011. There is a summary here https://www.nypl.org/sites/default/files/archivalcollections/pdf/18189.pdf and the actual document is available at Family Search here https://www.familysearch.org/library/books/records/item/606561-a-genealogy-of-the-ferris-family-descendants-of-zachariah-ferris?viewer=1&offset=3#page=1&viewer=picture&o=info&n=0&q= (free but membership required). It begins with Zachariah, subject of this profile. It appears well researched but primary sources are not always given. For example, the will of Zachariah is mentioned but no information given as to where it is/was found, etc.

There is currently no primary source documentation or verifiable secondary source documentation that he is the son of Samuel Ferris and Jerusha Reed.
