Biography

A Baptist missionary to China in the 1920s, Mary Fickett met Roger W. Howes, also a missionary, on a trip up the Yangtze River.[1] They were married on October 29, 1929 at the British Consulate in Chungking, China.[2][3] Remaining in China, they and their two daughters spent more than two years during World War II in a Japanese concentration camp in Shanghai.[1] They returned to the United States in 1945.[4] From 1947 to 1965, they served at the missionary headquarters in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and in 1965 they retired to Tucson, Arizona.[1] Mary died in Tucson on July 22, 1978.[1][5]

Mary was survived by her husband; daughters Mary Ruth Howes of Texas and Flora Nell Duke of England; brothers Webster L. Fickett and Fred W. Fickett, both of Tucson, and Harrold L. Fickett of Texas; and two grandchildren.[1][5]
