Biography

Robert was a Friend (Quaker)

Robert Field (II) was born sometime between 1631 and 1636 likely in England. This range of birth years is taken from Flushing, L.I., Friends' Record, which cites 1631 as his birth year and Torrey, who presents "?1636" as his approximate birth year including w/question mark. Because Robert II is on record as being deeded land from his father in 1653/4, signing public documents in 1656/7, and marrying in 1658 or 1660, these recorded events support the higher probability that Robert II was born in or close to the year of 1631.

In the U.S. Encyclopedia of American Quaker Genealogy (Vol. III, p. 120), Robert (II) was identified as the son of Robert (I) and Charity Field; however, as described in the biography of Robert Field, Robert (I) married Elizabeth (Taylor) on May 18, 1630 in West Yorkshire, Bradford, England and was married to Elizabeth in 1636, who died that same year. See Research Notes, Note #1.

Robert (I) first appeared in a list of inhabitants of Newport, Rhode Island subsequent to May 20, 1638 and was admitted as a freeman of the town on December 19, 1639. Note, the colony at Flushing, L.I. was in the jurisdiction of Rhode Island at this time.

Per Torrey, Robert (II) married Susanne or Susannah Unknown [Stevenson? per Torrey] before (or about) 1660 in Long Island, either in Flushing or Newtown.

Robert (II) and Susanne had the following nine (9) children: Mary (m. Col. William Willett); Charity (m. Edward Stevenson); Elnathan (m. Elizabeth Bullock); Robert III (m. Mrs Phebe Titus Scudder); Sarah (m. Jonathan Whitehead); Nathaniel (m. Patience Bull); Ambrose (m. Susannah Decou); Susannah (m1 Isaac Marriott, m2 Peter Thorne); and Benjamin (m. Experience Allen).

Robert (II) Field died on April 13, 1701 at Newton, Queens, L.I., NY. His wife survived him.

The following biographical outline was taken from the 'Field Genealogy: Being the Record of All the Field Family in America, p. 107 & 131.' See sources below.

Robert (II) FIELD married Susannah. He was probably the eldest son. Land was deeded to him by his father [Robert (I)] in 1653/54. He signed public documents in 1656 and 1657. Was at Newtown on or before 1670. Was named in patent for that town in 1686. He was constable April 30, 1685. Was a Quaker in religion. Mrs. Field [Susanna] was named in the entry of the marriage of her son Nathaniel. Robert (III) Field junior was probably the eldest son, as he is the first named in the deed of 1653/54. As already stated he removed to the adjoining town of Newtown in, or before, 1670. He appears in the records of that place as selling land there in 1671. He was one of the two overseers of Newtown in 1672, 1674, 1675, 1678 and 1680.
In the valuation of estates there in 1675, Robert (II) Field had 30 acres of land, 1 horse, 2 oxen, 5 cows (3 three year olds, 2 two year olds), 1 one year old, twenty sheep and 2 swine, one male person. The author infers from the last sentence that all his sons were then under age. In 1683, Robert (I) Field and Robert (II) Field were rate-payers at Newtown, and in 1685, the names of both are in a list of residents and probably freeholders there. On Nov 25, 1686, Governor Dongan granted a new patent to the inhabitants of Newtown confirming their rights which mentions both Roberts [(I) and (II)].
Robert(2) Field of Newtown L. I. to whom his father granted lands by deed Feb 12, 1653. He signed public documents in 1656 and 1657 and is named in patent of Flushing of 1665/6. He removed to Newtown in or before 1671 and is named in patent of that town of Nov 25, 1686; died there April 13 1701. His wife Susannah was named in the record of the marriage of her son Nathaniel and survived her husband. A patent of confirmation for the lands in Flushing dated Feb 16, 1666 was obtained from Governor Nicolls by Robert (I), his father, Robert (II), and his brother Benjamin. He died on April 13, 1701 Res., Newtown L.I..
List of the original patentees of Flushing: Thomas Farington, John Townsend, Thomas Stiles, Thomas Saull, John Marston, Robert Field, Thomas Applegate, Thomas Beddard, Laurence Dutch, John Laurence, William Laurence, William Thorne, Henry Santell, William Pigeon, Micheal Milliard, Robert Firman, John Hicks, Edward Hart.

Will of Robert (III) [son of Robert II, subject of this profile]

This will abstract is presented here to inform family relationships.

Robert (III) Field's will was dated the 10th day of the 10th month 1734, and proved April 16 1735. He names in it his brother Elnathan's children, Robert, Benjamin, Susannah, Phoebe, and Mary; the daughters of his brother Nathaniel who are not named, and a daughter of his brother Ambrose also not named. There are bequests to his sister Susannah, wife of Peter Thorne; to Robert Field and wife Elizabeth, and "my cousin (ie nephew) Robert Field is one of the executors. His widow Phoebe made her will the 12th day of the 11th month 1742. There are numerous legacies in it to relatives and friends and among others, to the wife of Robert Field and her two daughters and two sons Elnathan and Robert. It is evident from their wills that Robert and Phoebe Field died childless. He died in 1735 res., s. p., Newtown, LI.

Research Notes

1) Removed Charity as mother of Robert (2), b. 1631...he was the eldest son, and a possible son of a first marriage. Retained Link to Charity. Alternate mothers: Posssible Mother: Charity [--?--] Field Possible Mother: Elizabeth Taylor b. 1614, d. 1636

2) Robert (II) was born at least as early as 1632, since both he and his younger brother Anthony were of age on 12 February 1653/1654, when their father conveyed land to them. His death is recorded in Friends records, but no probate has been found; the early Friends records of Flushing are now preserved as those of the New York Meeting.

3) In 1656 he signed the petition in behalf of William Hallett. On 27 December 1657 he signed the Flushing Remonstrance. He lived in Flushing and in Newtown, Queens County, Long Island, NY.

4) On 16 February 1666/67 he may have been the Robert Field named in the second Patent of Flushing, unless this was, as is possible, his father.

5) On 13 July 1679 the will of William Graves of Newtown named his daughter Hannah Graves executor, with Mr. Robert Field, Sr. and Lieut. Gershom Moore executors in trust. He also willed Robert "my best suit of clothes."

6) No Field is named in Newtown tax rates for 27 January 1667/1668 and 26 February 1667/1668, but on 8 June 1669 Mary Wood was apprenticed in Newtown to Robert Field for five years, he to teach her to read English and "such necessary things as belong to a hus wife" (Newtown Town Court Minutes).

7) Robert Field, father, and Robert Field, son, were rated in 1683 at Newtown, Long Island. They both appeared in the Newtown patent of 25 November 1686. He appeared on the census of 1698 in Newtown, Queens County, Long Island, NY: either the Robert Field with six white persons and two negroes; or the other with five white persons and no negroes.

There are no church record’s or verifiable sources to say Robert was born/baptised in Yorkshire between his parent’s marriage of 1630 and 1636, so can only assume he was born/baptised in the United States.

Since Robert's father in theory showed up in Rhode Island in 1638, I'm pretty sure that means this Robert wasn't born there in 1631 or 1636.

Where in Rhode Island was he born? I couldn't see evidence that he was born there.

Is there any evidence that Robert had Ambrose for a middle name? If not, it seems it should be removed.

Field-765 and Field-1797 appear to represent the same person because: Aside from some very minor differences these profiles represent the same person. Elizabeth Taylor was a first wife. Not sure of the middle name Ambrose though.
