Biography

PETER RUCKER (JOHN1) was born Abt. 1660 in FRA. or GER., and died February 23, 1743/44 in St. Marks Parish, Orange Co., VA.. He married ELIZABETH FIELDING Abt. 1679 in GER. or VA., daughter of EDWARD FIELDING and ELIZABETH.

Notes for PETER RUCKER:

Some sources claim that Peter was a french huguenot who emmigrated about 1690, while other sources claim that is country of origin was Germany. The name Rucker does seem to be of German or Dutch origins. Peter immigrated before his father did, coming to America aboard a ship called The Rising Son (a French ship taken by the British during the war was one of four ships sailing from Gravesend, England with 700 passengers for America) that wrecked off the Virginia coasts outside of Jamestown near the mouth of the James River, Peter and a few others were able to swim to shore, and was naturalized along wirth a number of Frenchmen on April 24, 1704.

One source lists his fathers name as John while another lists it as Ambrose.

Peter Rucker, husband of Elizabeth Fielding, of German birth, was issued naturalization papers April 24, 1704, House of Burgess records of Virginia.

Peter & Elizabeth both were members of St. Marks Parish which was est. 1730 in Spotsylvania County and eventually included Orange and Culpeper County. Orange County, Virginia was formed from Spotsylvania County in 1734.

Peter was named as an executor in Timothy Crosthwait's will (dated 15 June 1756, and appears on page 229 of Orange County Will Book 2.)

DNA Connections
It may be possible to confirm family relationships with Elizabeth by comparing test results with other carriers of her mitochondrial DNA. However, there are no known mtDNA test-takers in her direct maternal line. It is likely that these autosomal DNA test-takers will share some percentage of DNA with Elizabeth:

LNAB should be changed to Unknown
posted by E. Logan
I see no reason to contradict available info and change LNAB to Unknown.

Please see the text on husband's profile:

"4. The surname Fielding came from Whitley's book and she has since admitted she was mistaken and that Fielding was not Elizabeth's maiden name. There is no evidence of a Fielding living near the Ruckers in Essex Co. The family Coghill has been researched and no evidence exists of a female named Elizabeth Coghill. Frederick Coghill's wife's maiden name was Goss, but we can find no Elizabeth Goss."

See Linda's comment further down as well.

Edit at will, since there aren't any parents or other complications. That's the beauty of Wikitree.

The LNAB can only be altered by the profile manager or individuals on the trusted list, that's why I posted it as a comment. Given that I have no interest in the profile other than maintaining its accuracy, I see no reason why I should be added as a manager or trusted list member, hence my (poorly worded) request for the LNAB to be changed to Unknown.

from Bio above: "PETER RUCKER (JOHN1) was born Abt. 1660 in FRA. or GER., and died February 23, 1743/44 in St. Marks Parish, Orange Co., VA.. He married ELIZABETH FIELDING Abt. 1769 in GER. or VA., daughter of EDWARD FIELDING and ELIZABETH."

Please check dates, they both died before that marriage date.

Feel free to edit the bio. My guess is it’s a simple typo and marriage should be 1679, but I haven’t any documentation.

I really have not been able to work on anything on the website due to my ill health and age. So if anyone needs to change anything it is fine.
Fielding-339 and Fielding-853 appear to represent the same person because: These appear to be the same
If Elizabeth's name was not known, why is she included in family trees as a Fielding? If she is not one, this would invalidate a large part of the tree.
The maiden name of Elizabeth, wife of Peter Rucker, is not known. Many people over the years have believed that she was a Fielding, with possible parents Edward Fielding and Elizabeth Polteney of Bristol, England.

Some alternately believe that she was a Coghill.

However, according to the Rucker Family Society's report, written by Jean Brydon:

The surname Fielding came from Whitley's book and she has since admitted she was mistaken and that Fielding was not Elizabeth's maiden name. There is no evidence of a Fielding living near the Ruckers in Essex Co. The family Coghill has been researched and no evidence exists of a female named Elizabeth Coghill. Frederick Coghill's wife's maiden name was Goss, but we can find no Elizabeth Goss.

Fielding-14 and Unknown-26033 appear to represent the same person because: same first name, husband and death

Fielding-14 and Fielding-276 appear to represent the same person because: I think these are probably the same person despite the difference in birth dates (?)

Fielding-14 and Fielding-20 appear to represent the same person because: The 1676 birth date (Firlding-20) cannot be correct. I think this is the same person. I would merge and retain the 1660 birth date--what do you think?
