FIELDS, Ansel b. 1749/50 VA d. 10-1-1834 IN md Martha DODD Sgt NC PSNR WPNS ==> Sargeant from North Carolina, pensioner, widow's pension
While Ansel was sure of the month and day of his birth, he stated in his pension application in Shelby Co, Ind. that his older brother John of North Carolina recorded the family records and he could not remember the exact year, so it would seem that he was born Jan 5 in about 1753, rather than the date he gave.
Ansel Fields was living in Guilford Co, NC (having moved when he was about 12 years old) during the Revolutionary War where he enlisted in July 1790 for three months under Capt John Leak, Lt. George Peay and Ensign James Leak. He served as sergeant in the Gulford Regiment of the NC Militia which was commanded by Col James Martin and Maj Robin Ralston under Gen Rutherford. He served as sergeant three other tours of three months under the same officers. Besides Indian skirmishes in South Carolina, he marched on the second tour to Cross Creek at Fayettteville to join the regular army when it was thought that an invasion would occur there; then participated in the Battle of Guilford Court House in March 1781. It was his concensus that both parties lost the battle there as both retreated. He was discharged in Aug 1781.
Ansel Fields named Chesley Barnes, Nicholas McCubbin,
George Nicks, Samuel Gann, Thomas Carter, Sr and James Delay as some of the men who served with him.
