Biography

Lucy was Cherokee.

Lucy Fields was born about 1806 in the Cherokee Nation (East), the daughter of Richard Fields and Nancy Brown, both Cherokee. In 1822 the Moravian missionaries wrote "Lucy Fields, who stayed with her half-brother Mr. Vann last winter and diligently attended our services with her sister-in-law Janey [Jennie] Vann came to say good-bye to us before her departure." [1] She married George Hicks about 1823. On Sept. 12, 1824 the Moravians wrote "After the sermon... a baby girl born Aug. 3 to our friends George and Lucy Hicks ... was baptized ..and received the named Delilah Emilia. [2] On April 9, 1826 the baptism of son Jefferson, born January 3, was recorded, and on February 17, 1828 daughter Nancy Eleanora was baptized. Although Lucy had been baptized as a Methodist about 1820, she was re-baptized by the Moravians in 1829. [3] George and Lucy were also the parents of Henry, David (died young), Frank, William, and Mary. The 1835 Cherokee census shows a family of seven living on Conasauga Creek (Tennessee). [4] The family was Removed to Indian Territory over the Trail of Tears. George was conductor of their detachment. Lucy apparently died before 1851 since only George appears on the Drennan Roll with five of their children. [5]
