Ezekiel was born in the Delaware District, Cherokee Nation, in 1842. He was the son of Ezekiel Fields and Polly Sexton. George is listed on the 1851 Drennan Roll with his brother George and sister Mary, living in the Delaware District. [1] He married Margaret Wire, a white woman, in 1863. They were the parents of Wesley, Richard, Mary, Martha, Ezekiel, [2] Ella, Maggie, and Lula. [3] [4]

Ezekiel was enrolled by the Dawes Commission as a Cherokee by Blood in 1902 and was approved for a share of the Eastern Cherokee (Guion Miller) payment in 1911. [5]

The 1910 and 1920 U.S. Censuses show Bud and Margaret still living in the Delaware District. [6] Ezekiel died in 1926 and is buried at the Fields Cemetery , Delaware County, OK. [7]

Research Notes

Ezekiel and his brother George Fields, who were both illiterate, filed Eastern Cherokee Applications in 1907. The person who filled out the forms for them attempted to translate everyone's name into Cherokee, but made a mess of it and wrote down "Klaugassu" for "Tlo-ge-s-i," the Cherokee word for "field." He also attempted to transliterate first names, with "Segullah" for "Ezekiel, for example. These are not names that were actually used by the members of this family. The transliterated names have been further garbled in entries in on-line family trees.
